Courtland's 35th Annual Pear Fair was held on July 29, 2007. Courtland, south of Sacramento on Highway 160, is a beautiful small town right on the Sacramento River. There are lots of mature trees for shade, and that wonderful hometown feeling where everyone knows and cares about each other. There was plenty of parking on a grassy field. An enormous tent was erected, which housed the Main Stage, gave folks a place to sit in the shade, and even had a mechanical bull ride for the kids. The parade started at 1pm, and boasted entries by the Caledonian Club, both the Courtland and Walnut Grove Fire Departments, the contestants for Pear Queen 2007, Pear Queens of years past, Coast Guard Station Rio Vista, the Delta High School Saints cheerleaders, and the Sutter Stompers clogging team. Shirley Rigg was the Grand Marshall. After the parade, Alexandrea Johnson was crowned 2007 Pear Queen. Her court included Brenda Beas and Emily Castro.
The Jay Rollerz Band and Take 2 Party Band wowed the crowd with their great music. Folks were dancing in the big tent, or just sitting on the hay bales to enjoy the music. There was also a classic car show, lots of fun stuff for the kids, plenty of vendors in grassy, shady locations, and of course the food court. Lots of tempting things were to be found there, including many pear-based items. Sarah Simpson, dressed up as a pear, was handing out souvenir buttons. The Fair was very well organized, and a pleasure to attend.
